About TNTA:

Tamil Nadu Tennis Association (TNTA) is a 96-year old institution, which promotes and administers the game of Tennis in Tamil Nadu. TNTA is recognised as the official body for the game of Tennis in the State by the Tamil Nadu Government, the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, the Tamil Nadu Olympic Association and the All India Tennis Association. Today TNTA has 23 clubs and 15 district associations affiliated to it. TNTA has always been in the forefront in promoting Tennis in the State and the country since its early roots and Chennai has been popularly called the “Mecca of Indian Tennis”.

About the Tournament:

The Appaswamy Open Tennis Championship for both Men and Women is to be conducted under the auspices of All India Tennis Association (AITA) and TNTA at Match Point Tennis Academy, Krishnan Tennis Centre from 27th September to 2nd October 2021. This prestigious event is to be conducted on clay courts making it the highest prize money Clay Court event in the country with a total prize money of Rs. 5 lakhs sponsored by Appaswamy Real Estates. Prize money break up is as per AITA guidelines and the Singles Winner, both Men and Women will receive prize money of Rs. 31,250/- each and 40 AITA points. It is after a very long period that a combined Men &Women event; other than the National Championship; is being held jointly at the same venue during the same week in the country. It could be the forerunner for more such events to be conducted in the future.  The tournament will definitely infuse fresh excitement and thrust to the development of the game after the Lockdowns of the Covid Pandemic. The cost of the tournament is Rs.10 lakhs inclusive of prize money.

 

The 8-day tournament will be held at the well maintained clay courts of the Match Point Tennis Academy located at Krishnan Tennis Centre, Chennai. The qualifying matches for both Men and Women will be played from 25th September, while the main draw matches are scheduled to commence on 27th September. The finals are scheduled for Saturday, 2nd October. The sign in for the Qualifying event will be held between 12 noon to 2 pm on Friday the 24th September 2021 at the venue. The sign in for the Main draw of 32 for the Singles event will be between 12 noon and 2 pm on Sunday 26th September 2021. The event will be a no-spectator event and strict covid protocols will be followed. Head Tour tennis balls will be used. All players need to be registered with AITA. Qualifying event is an open draw and onsite sign in is possible.

 

125 Men and 100 Women from 20 states in the country are taking part in the 4 events of this prestigious tournament – Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles and Women’s Doubles. The states include Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Haryana, Karnataka, Delhi, Punjab, Telangana, West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Puducherry, Chhattisgarh, Uttarkhand, Maharashtra, Kerala & Tamil Nadu.

 

Prithvi Sekhar, Gold medallist at the World Deaf Championship, ranked 15, V. M Ranjith, Former National Champion, ranked 23,  Dhakshineswar Suresh, Khelo India champion and Kumaran Bharath Nishok, top player from Coimbatore are leading the Tamil Nadu Challenge amongst the Men. Fardeen Qumar and Faisal Qamar from Rajasthan, Chinmaya Dev Chauhan from Uttar Pradesh, Parikshit Somani from Assam are amongst the prominent players from other states.

 

Vaidehi Chaudhari of Gujarat ranked 7, Yubrani Banerjee of West Bengal, ranked 20, Akanksha Nitture Maharashtra, current National Clay Court Girls U 18 Champion and top two ladies from Tamil Nadu – C. Sai Samhitha and Arthi Muniyan, ranked 13 and 18 respectively in the country will be amongst those who vie for the honours in the Women’s events.
