The Curtains of TATA Open 2003, the only ATP Event in India with the ever strongest field were drawn on 5th January 2003 after the grand finals were played at the Nungambakkam Tennis Stadium, Chennai. The following are the results of the Semifinals and finals.
Semifinals
Singles:
Karol Kucera (Svk) beat Juan Ignacio Chela (Arg) 6-3,7-5
Paradorn Srichaphan (Tha) beat Jean-Rene Lisnard (Fra) 6-2,6-1
Doubles:
Frantisek Cermak (Czech) & Leos Friedl (Czech) beat Mahesh Bhupathi (Ind) & Todd Woodbridge (Aus) 6-2,6-2
Julian Knowles (Aut) & Michael Kohlmann (Ger) beat Tomas Cibulec (Czec) & Ota Fukarek (Czec) 6-4,7-5
Finals
Singles:
Paradorn Srichaphan (Tha) beat Karol Kucera (Svk) 6-3,6-1
Doubles:
Julian Knowles (Aut) & Michael Kohlmann (Ger) beat Frantisek Cermak (Czech) & Leos Friedl (Czech) 7-6(1), 7-6(3)
All the players including the new champion Paradorn Srichaphan and the runner-up, Karol Kucera were appreciative of the excellent arrangements made by IMG, Sponsor – TATA, AITA and TNTA for the smooth conduct of the tournament and the supportive crowds that turned up during the week to witness the matches.
The event was covered widely in the media. The TV coverage of the event by ESPN had great clarity and was exceptionally good.
In brief, TATA Open 2003 was exciting for Tennis players, the organisers and the spectators.
